Christmas in London: The Natural History Museum

Natural History Museum carousel

It’s strange the things that remind us that Christmas is coming. For me, it’s the arrival of the skating rink at the Natural History Museum in South Kensington, because that also means the arrival of the old-fashioned fairground-style merry-go-round (or carousel to our American cousins) that appears every year.

Set against the spectacular architecture of the museum buildings, the warm, colourful glow of the merry-go-round draws you in to a nostalgia for a past that probably never was; a Mary Poppins world of brightly-painted horses (each with its own individual name) and sparkling, spinning lights that are designed to hotwire that hidden part of your brain that never left childhood, the part of your brain that still sees and feels the magic of the festive season….
