Christmas at Alton Red Cross Hospital

Photograph of a group of patients, doctors and nurses taken between 1914 and 1919 at Alton Red Cross Hospital. The poster above the fireplace reads A Merry Christmas to All and the ward has been decorated for Christmas with streamers and paper lanterns. The Alton Red Cross Hospital was established in the Assembly Rooms in November 1914 and remained in use until January 1919.

Note: this is not an image of a London hospital, as I couldn’t find one (Alton is in Hampshire, one of the counties just outside London) – but it shows how efforts were made to give wounded men now back in Blighty a decent Christmas celebration.
